New pallet handling system for the food industry: Logiss develops a custom solution between two production levels

The Logiss team is finalizing the installation of a new system for the automated handling of pallets and containers at a facility of a major Italian company in the food sector.
The system has been designed to optimize the connection between two distinct levels of the production site, with special attention to manual pallet truck accessibility and long-term maintenance safety.

The client’s objective was to minimize vertical manual handling and downtime during interdepartmental transfers. The solution developed by Logiss includes the installation of a pallet and industrial container elevator, integrated with a floor-level motorized conveyor system — ideal for environments where materials are moved using manual pallet trucks instead of forklifts.

Pallet lifting system: vertical solution for internal logistics

The core of the system is an industrial pallet elevator designed to handle loads of varying sizes and weights. It allows materials to be transferred smoothly between the ground floor and the upper level, reducing bottlenecks in internal logistics flows and, most importantly, improving operator safety.

The main advantage lies in the integration of floor-level conveyors installed in recessed pits and equipped with side guards — a strategic choice that allows personnel to load and unload directly with manual pallet trucks, without the need for ramps, inclines, or motorized equipment. This configuration is particularly suitable for the food sector, where safety, cleanliness, and easy sanitization are essential requirements.

Floor-level transport lines: benefits and technical aspects

The system, composed of conveyors flush with the floor, has been designed to allow direct access with manual pallet trucks, eliminating any height difference between the walking surface and the load-bearing area. While this setup offers major operational benefits — in terms of ergonomics, safety, and flow continuity — it also required precise management of floor level tolerances.

In complex production environments, even slight irregularities in the flooring can compromise conveyor alignment and disrupt automated handling. For this reason, the system was developed with height-adjustable modular frames, capable of adapting precisely to surface variations.

The choice of zero-level conveyors aligned with the finished floor is a functional and customer-aligned design decision, supporting the prevalent use of manual pallet trucks for loading and unloading. This solution optimizes handling time, reduces the need for dedicated equipment, and enhances overall usability for on-site staff.

Elevated maintenance without MEWP: long-term safety ensured

Once the system is fully installed, access using Mobile Elevating Work Platforms (MEWPs) will no longer be feasible due to space saturation in the upper area of the system. Fixed structures, industrial installations, ducts, and service lines will make it impossible to safely operate mobile platforms.

To ensure safe access for both routine and extraordinary maintenance activities, Logiss integrated a fixed technical walkway into the design, featuring:
• Access ladders with non-slip steps
• Certified anchorage points for personal protective equipment (PPE)
• Side railings compliant with regulations

This configuration ensures maintainability of the logistics system even in fully utilized spaces, in compliance with Legislative Decree 81/08 and best practices in industrial safety.

With this new pallet handling system between production levels, Logiss confirms its ability to design and implement customized internal logistics solutions in complex industrial environments.
The system will be tested and launched following the usual functional testing and personnel training phases. It is already prepared for future integration with modules for weighing, tracking, and quality control.

Thanks to its technical and collaborative approach, Logiss continues to be a key partner for those seeking automated logistics solutions in the food sector — with a strong focus on safety, hygiene, and ease of maintenance.
